Spaying your pet. OVARIOHYSTERECTOMY
When your pet is at least 6 months old, prior to the first heat cycle is considered the best time to spay your pet. Surgical risks are every slight. Contrary to many opinions, pets do not get lazy or fat after being spayed. Fatness comes from over feeding and poor exercise regimens. Same as humans. Neither are personalities altered, and if anything, get better. Surgery is a 25 minute procedure and painless since the pet is under a general anesthesia. Pet medicines used for post-surgery minimize pain . Most pets go home the same day that the surgery is performed. If you are going to price shop for the surgery, be sure prices are “all inclusive.” Recheck and suture removal in 14 days should be included in the initial fee. Prices are higher for heavier dogs since they require more anesthesia. Normal prices run around $150.00 for dogs less than 100 pounds. Limit your pet’s activity for a week after surgery. Suture removal is in 14 days. Do not give your pet a bath until sutures come out. Observe your pet’s operation incision daily. Get a restraint collar if your pet is licking at the incision too much, or is pulling at the sutures. If this behavior is obsessive, your pet’s activity could potentially cause some serious complications. Notify the Vet: If you notice a discharge or swelling at the surgical site and the general health of your pet is suspect. If your pet removes a suture or otherwise irritates the incision. If your pet refuses to eat or drink or seems unusually depressed after the first day home. The Operation: A muscle-relaxer such as Rompun and a short- acting barbiturate are used to incapacitate your pet and for the insertion of a tube into the airway for air and anesthesia. A clamp is used to hold the mouth open and the tube is installed. It is not uncommon for the anesthising gas to be switched to another (such as isofluorine) for the surgery. The surgical area is shaved, urine is expressed from the dog’s bladder and a betadine scrub is used to clean and rinse the site. A sterile scrub pack is used by the vet . The vet scrubs his hands and arms before the operation. A needle used to inject the barbiturate is left in the vein in case more drug is needed is kept handy. The dog is hooked to a heart monitor. The veterinarian clamps the skin to stretch it taut and begins the incision. The incision must be done carefully to minimize muscle damage. The dog’s uterus is a Y-shaped organ. In a complete ovariohysterectomy, the uterine body and horns and the ovaries and the tubes connecting the ovaries to the horns are removed. The vet uses disolvable sutures for the cuts at the ovaries and the cervix. The incision is then closed with layers of stitches.
